• Each entry carries a status, the episode it was raised, an evidence log stamped by episode, a leading theory, and what would settle it.
• Statuses: OPEN (no useful evidence yet), NARROWING (evidence is accumulating), ANSWERED (the show has resolved it).

Open questions

Q1. Who killed Hal Jordan, and where is his ring?

Status: OPEN · Raised: Ep 1 · Last updated: Ep 1

Evidence log

• Ep 1 2026: Hal found frozen in the bleachers, blood on his face, in the exact seat he occupied in 2016. Ring absent.
• Ep 1 2026: John is also ringless and drives rather than flies.
• Ep 1 2016: Hal states that this is his job and nobody takes it while he's alive.
• [TRAILER] Sinestro tells Hal that John may be there to take the ring, not to train.
• Context Guy Gardner holds a ring by the events of Superman, which is set in 2025, a year before Hal's body is found.
• [CREATOR] Co-creator Tom King has referred to Guy as having the ring when discussing the premiere's missing-ring mystery. A creator statement, not a scene.

Leading theory (Plausible). The ring is central, but the timing rules out the obvious version. Guy is publicly carrying a ring a year before Hal is found dead, which means Hal may have lost or given up the ring before he was killed. The murder and the missing ring might not be the same event.

What would settle it: Establishing where the ring goes between 2016 and 2026.

Q2. Why did Hal stop backing himself up?

Evidence log

• Ep 1 Lanterns are meant to back up their consciousness into the ring weekly. Hal's Energy Twin is roughly a decade out of date.
• Ep 1 That decade-old backup nonetheless delivers the "hail" alert for Rushville.
• Ep 1 Hal has been monitoring Rushville privately for years.
• Context Episode 1 places the backup at roughly a decade old as of 2016, so the year is around 2006. That is arithmetic from the show, not a separate reveal.

Leading theory (Plausible). Deliberate, not lazy. He was keeping what he'd learned about Rushville out of a record the Guardians can read.

What would settle it: Any scene establishing who can access a Lantern's backups.

Q3. Was Abin Sur's crash an accident?

Status: OPEN · Raised: Ep 1 · Last updated: Ep 2

Evidence log

• Ep 1 Abin Sur of Sector 2814 crashed just outside Rushville and passed Hal the ring while dying.
• Ep 1 Hal says he has never believed it was an accident.
• Ep 1 Earth is described as a backwater beneath the Guardians' notice.
• Ep 2 Antaan's people came to Rushville too, for their own reasons. That is now two separate parties drawn to the same small town.

Leading theory (Plausible). He was brought down, and everything in Rushville descends from that.

What would settle it: The wreck, or anyone who was there.

Q4. Who is William Macon caretaking for?

Status: OPEN · Raised: Ep 1 · Last updated: Ep 2

Evidence log

• Ep 1 Macon says the ranch isn't his; he's the caretaker, bound by an NDA.
• Ep 1 He rules out the federal government when Hal guesses it.
• Ep 1 He funds a militia and believes the man in custody is an advance scout.
• Ep 2 Hal goes to the ranch and puts the question of Macon's technology to him directly. He is told to leave, and is later shot.
• Ep 2 Macon's operation has working alien-detection technology. Hal recognises what it is and says he has not seen its like elsewhere.

Leading theory (Wild). If the Manhunters shape-shift, an anti-alien militia is exactly the cover an alien operation would choose.

What would settle it: The party paying for the ranch.

Q5. How and why did the Guardians select John Stewart?

Status: OPEN · Raised: Ep 1 · Last updated: Ep 2

Evidence log

• Ep 1 John was chosen by the Guardians as Hal's backup. No account of how or when.
• Ep 1 Hal notes he never had to interview; John clearly did.
• Ep 1 John trained for two months without being allowed to wear the ring.
• Ep 2 John creates a construct that keeps going after he no longer has the ring. Nothing in either episode suggests that is normal.
• [TRAILER] Sinestro suggests John's purpose isn't training.

Leading theory (Plausible). The selection predates Hal's knowledge of it, and connects to Q6. Whatever the Guardians saw, the construct is the first evidence of it.

What would settle it: Any scene set on Oa before 2016.

Q6. How did John Sr. know the question?

Status: OPEN · Raised: Ep 1 · Last updated: Ep 1

Evidence log

• Ep 1 1996: John Sr. asks his son whether he's afraid, the exact test for a Green Lantern ring.
• Ep 1 He did not see the interview in which that test was explained.
• Ep 1 He is career military and comfortable with a firearm.
• Ep 1 He is aware his son is in Lantern training in 2016 and coaches him through it.

Leading theory (Solid, as a question). Someone told him, years before John was chosen. Which makes his son's selection less of a coincidence and more of a plan.

What would settle it: Who John Sr. reports to, if anyone.

Q7. What is Zoe Macon?

Status: NARROWING · Raised: Ep 1 · Last updated: Ep 2

Evidence log

• Ep 1 At the bar she is knowledgeable about rings, the Corps, and who Lanterns answer to.
• Ep 1 She initiates contact with John and asks leading questions about his chain of command.
• Ep 1 She is William Macon's wife and Noah's grandmother.
• Ep 1 William makes clear he knows what happened, and does nothing about it.
• Ep 2 She appears once, briefly, in a diner booth.
• Ep 2 Kerry has independently worked out the victims were not human and is building a case, which makes her caution about the Macons professional rather than protective.

Leading theory (Plausible). Placed, and the encounter was the point. Kerry's position weakens the reading that the whole family moves as one unit, which makes Zoe's approach look more like her own move.

What would settle it: Whether William's non-reaction is tolerance or coordination.

Q8. Who in Rushville is human?

Status: NARROWING · Raised: Ep 1 · Last updated: Ep 2

Evidence log

• Ep 1 Fourteen known species pass as human; no test on Earth distinguishes them.
• Ep 1 Waylon Sanders passed a full X-ray as human.
• Ep 1 The victims wore Kimball shirts; Waylon claimed to be a trucker from Kimball.
• Ep 1 Waylon had a device woven into his skeleton and set it off rather than be questioned further. Episode 2 places him inside Antaan's group, and the rest of that group talk to John without incident, so this looks like one man's choice under interrogation rather than a trait of the species.
• Ep 2 Antaan and his people are aliens operating openly in human form. In episode, not trailer.
• Ep 2 Antaan says a surviving Manhunter is living in Rushville as a human. His claim, not something we have been shown.
• [TRAILER] The Manhunters shape-shift in this adaptation.
• Ep 2 Macon's operation has technology that detects aliens. It works.

Leading theory (Wild). Rule nobody out, including the sheriff. Sight does not distinguish them, and the only suspect ever questioned destroyed himself before finishing the conversation.

What would settle it: Whether Macon's detector identifies species, and whether it registers a Manhunter at all.

Q9. Which Manhunter survived, and who in Rushville is it?

• Ep 2 Antaan says a Manhunter destroyed his people's world, was taken into custody by a Green Lantern, and was never brought to justice.
• Ep 2 He believes it is in Rushville, living as a human. Identity withheld.
• Ep 2 He recruits John to help find it.
• Ep 2 Manhunters are named on screen for the first time.
• [TRAILER] Manhunters shape-shift in this adaptation.

Leading theory (Wild). Every adult Macon is available. So is Kerry. The show has spent two episodes removing every way of checking.

What would settle it: A detection method, or the Manhunter revealing itself.

Q10. Why did John's construct keep going after he lost the ring?

Status: OPEN · Raised: Ep 2 · Last updated: Ep 2

Evidence log

• Ep 2 John creates a bird construct. It persists after he no longer has the ring.
• Ep 1 Constructs shown so far are momentary and mostly off screen.

Leading theory (Plausible). This is a question about John, not about a bird. Either it is alive, or he is sustaining it at a distance. Both answers say something about why the Guardians picked him, which makes this Q5's other half.

What would settle it: Any explanation of construct persistence, or the bird acting on its own.

Q11. What do Hal and Sinestro trade?

Status: OPEN · Raised: Ep 2 · Last updated: Ep 2

Evidence log

• Ep 2 Hal charges the ring, suits up, leaves Earth and visits Sinestro in a Corps prison. Sinestro has information about the Manhunter.
• [TRAILER] Sinestro tells Hal that John may be there to take the ring rather than to train.
• [COMICS] Sinestro is Hal's former mentor and later his greatest enemy. A different continuity, and the show has confirmed none of it.

Leading theory (Plausible). Not an alliance. A bargain, and Hal is willing to make one.

What would settle it: Whatever Sinestro asks for in return.

Q12. Who is Antaan's group answerable to, and why was the Manhunter never brought to justice?

Status: OPEN · Raised: Ep 2 · Last updated: Ep 2

• Ep 2 A Green Lantern took the Manhunter into custody, and it was never brought to justice. Antaan's account.
• Ep 2 Antaan says the football-field victims were his team. Waylon Sanders belonged to the same group.
• Ep 1 Waylon said the purpose was being kept from the Corps specifically, which now reads as the same warning Antaan gives an episode later.

Leading theory (Plausible). Antaan's group has been keeping its Rushville mission away from the Corps since Episode 1, and Episode 2 finally explains why: they believe a Lantern took the Manhunter into custody and it was never brought to justice. Waylon and Antaan are the same operation, so this is one group's account stated twice, not two sources agreeing.

What would settle it: Who took custody, and what happened next.
