Q2. Why did Hal stop backing himself up?

• Ep 1 Lanterns are meant to back up their consciousness into the ring weekly. Hal's Energy Twin is roughly a decade out of date.
• Ep 1 That decade-old backup nonetheless delivers the "hail" alert for Rushville.
• Ep 1 The decade-old Halogram knows Rushville matters and leaves the alert. Hal has long been suspicious of the area because Abin Sur crashed there. The episode does not establish continuous monitoring.
• Ep 6 John summons the Halogram at Hal's grave. It reacts with surprise to seeing its own body, confirming that it predates Hal's death. It is the only surviving version of Hal the series has shown, and Episode 6 supplies no more precise backup date.
• Ep 7 The Halogram knows John only as the trainee who passed its "hail" alert on to Hal in 2016. Otherwise its personality and memories stop around 2006: it knows nothing of Hal's prison sentence or his later relationship with Kerry.
• Ep 8 Recharging the ring erases the Halogram. The only backup of Hal the series has shown is gone, and the finale does not say why he stopped making new ones.
• [CONTEXT] Episode 1 places the backup at roughly a decade old in 2016, dating it to around 2006. That is arithmetic from the show, not a separate reveal.

Leading theory (Plausible). The lapse was deliberate rather than lazy. Hal may have been keeping what he learned about Rushville out of a record the Guardians could read.

What would settle it: An explanation of why Hal stopped making backups and confirmation of who can access a Lantern's stored consciousness.

Q10. How did John's construct keep going after he lost the ring?

• Ep 2 John's bird construct remains active throughout the Coast City round trip after Hal takes the ring back. Nobody in the show can explain it.
• Ep 3 John's parents told him that the birds outside the house were watching over him and reporting to the Guardians. A bird appeared on his birthday cake. His mother later admitted that the story was an invention.
• Ep 7 The Halogram stays after John takes the ring off, and tells him most Lanterns can't do that.
• Ep 8 Recharging the ring from the new lantern erases the Halogram, and Hal knows beforehand that it will. The finale does not say why.

Leading theory (Plausible). The ability belongs to John, not to the bird. Episode 3 explained why he built a bird, and Episode 7 shows a second, very different construct outlasting the ring in the same way, with the 2006 Hal treating it as rare. What has not been explained is how he does it. Episode 8 complicates the picture, because recharging the ring is what ends the Halogram.

What would settle it: An account of the mechanism: whether the ring keeps supplying the construct, or whether John is holding it up himself.

Q13. Why do the Guardians want Hal replaced?

Leading theory (Plausible). The Guardians are not merely managing a succession; they are managing someone they regard as a liability. Hal disobeys orders, keeps his own counsel and does not trust them. John was the replacement in waiting: raised for the job by his mother on a Guardian's hint, then recruited as an adult.

What would settle it: A direct explanation of what the Guardians believe Hal has done, or is about to do, that makes replacing him urgent.

Q14. What did the ring respond to in John Stewart Sr.?

• Ep 1 Abin Sur crashed outside Rushville, and Hal has never believed it was an accident.
• Ep 3 A Guardian tells Bernadette that whatever the ring detected in John Sr. might also be present in his son.

• Ep 7 The Halogram says Hal was never fearless because he was brave. He was fearless because he was broken, and his father and grandfather carried the same pain.
• Ep 8 John takes the ring with an oath of his own, built on admitting fear: "I'll embrace my fear, I'll do what's right." His father lost his chance at the ring in 1986 by saying he was afraid. John takes it while saying the same.

Leading theory (Wild). If the quality is inheritable, the ring may not have been choosing only a person. It may have been responding to a bloodline, and it found this family first. Episode 7 adds an uncomfortable twist: the Jordans pass something down too, and in Hal's case what the ring's question read as fearlessness was despair.

What would settle it: Any account of what the ring actually looks for beyond the question it asks.

Q25. Who firebombed Hal's house?

• Ep 8 Sinestro forged the lantern there, from the fear in that world's air and water. It is green, streaked with yellow.

• Ep 8 John charges Hal's ring from it, and takes the ring with an oath that embraces fear instead of denying it.
• Ep 8 The season ends with John's first flight.

What would settle it: The ring or the lantern doing something a standard Green Lantern's could not, or someone on screen explaining what the mix does.

Q27. How will the Guardians answer John?

• Ep 5 John works out, and Zoe confirms, that the Guardians created the Manhunters, then wiped them out, all but her, when they judged them too brutal.
• Ep 5 John refuses the oath, returns Hal's ring and lantern, and hands Lianna a bag holding Zoe's crystallised heart, calling it the Guardians' sins and consequences.
• Ep 6 Guy fears being sent to the Phantom Zone just for retrieving Hal's decommissioned ring to bury with him.
• Ep 8 John lights Guy's beacon and tells him to think of him as an independent contractor: "No Guardians, no Corps. You take the stars; have fun. I'll take the dirt."
• Ep 8 Guy objects that the system does not work that way, and warns that the Guardians would send an army. John does not budge, and Guy leaves to tell them.

Leading theory (Plausible). John's message is leverage dressed as a request. He knows the Guardians made the Manhunters, and he has already handed Lianna Zoe's heart as the Guardians' sins and consequences, so "search their hearts" reads as a reminder of what he could expose. The finale never makes the threat explicit.

What would settle it: A Guardian answering John on screen.

Q28. Can Noah resist what he is?

• Ep 5 The Guardians created the Manhunters and later wiped them out, all but Zoe.
• Ep 5 Before the attack, Zoe tells Noah that many people will die today and not to forget what she has told him.

• Ep 8 When John comes back through the portal, Noah ambushes him, beats him and takes the ring. He then claims he killed Hal, which is false, and asks John to kill him.

• W1 · The destroyed silo on the road into Rushville (Ep 1). It is intact in 2016 and wreckage in 2026. The attack on Rushville in Episode 5 is the likeliest cause.
• W2 · Hal sits in the same bleacher seat in 2016 and 2026 (Ep 1, Ep 6, Ep 7, Ep 8). Resolved in Episode 8. He went there to meet Kerry, to tell her he knew what Noah was and to take them both away. She shot him where he sat.
• W3 · Waylon's stated motive: vengeance (Ep 1). Resolved in Episode 2. Antaan says his group is hunting the surviving Manhunter in revenge for the destruction of its people. That resolves the group's stated motive, not the truth of the allegation.
• W4 · The purpose being hidden from the Corps concerns war (Ep 1). Resolved in Episode 2. According to Antaan, the group intends to kill the surviving Manhunter because a Lantern allegedly failed to deliver justice.

• W8 · Earl, Hal's carnivorous plant (Ep 2, Ep 6, Ep 8). Earl returns in Episode 6, and feeding him is the reason John gives for remaining in Rushville. In Episode 8, Hal grabs Earl as he tries to escape the fire. Whether the plant has any larger significance remains unclear.
• W9 · John still watches the birds after learning the story was a lie (Ep 3). He knows and continues anyway. That may be sentiment, or something the show has not explained.
• W10 · Gotham references: Kerry's "Barb" call, her Gotham origin, Janus Cosmetics, and Guy's beacon copied from Batman's signal (Ep 1, Ep 2, Ep 3, Ep 6). Janus appears twice, on a poster in Episode 1 and as a closed storefront in Episode 3. The earlier references could have been background texture, but Hal saying outright that Guy's beacon was copied from Batman's signal makes the Gotham connection deliberate DCU connective tissue. It does not by itself suggest Batman will appear.
• W11 · The name Hector Hammond, used as an alias (Ep 4). [COMICS] Hector Hammond is a major Green Lantern villain. Here the name is spent on a one-scene deception. It may be a clean trick or groundwork.
• W12 · John refuses to take the ring permanently by declining to recite the oath (Ep 4, Ep 6, Ep 7, Ep 8). Resolved in Episode 8. John recites an oath of his own: "In brightest day, in darkest night, I'll embrace my fear, I'll do what's right. I choose this ring, I choose this fight, in service to this lantern's light."
• W13 · Whether Hal kept acting on Sinestro's influence (Ep 4, Ep 7, Ep 8). Resolved in Episode 8. Hal was containing Sinestro. The portal was Zoe's. Hal went through it after Noah, found Sinestro there and locked the portal away.
• W14 · Sinestro does not appear in Episode 5 (Ep 5). Resolved in Episode 6. He was broken out of the Guardians' prison while Hal was locked up. Episode 8 reveals that Noah freed him (Q20).
• W15 · Hal chips or removes a piece from his ring before activating Sentry Protocol (Ep 5). An existing ability given a new use. Why the action is needed, whether it damages the ring and whether it can be repeated are all unexplained.
• W16 · Carol Ferris attends the funeral (Ep 6). Hal's former girlfriend. [COMICS] In the comics, Carol is Hal's longest-running love interest. She hands John the eulogy Hal wrote for himself.
• W17 · Hal asks John to tell nobody he was at the café (Ep 6, Ep 8). Said with a freshly broken nose, hours before he is shot. Protecting John, or keeping someone else from knowing they met. Episode 8 shows what Hal did later that night: he went to the bleachers to tell Kerry he knew about Noah, and to take them both away. That may be why he wanted the meeting kept quiet. The finale does not say.
• W18 · Maggie's figure is $314,536.27 (Ep 6, Ep 7, Ep 8). Resolved in Episode 8, as far as the blackmail goes. John leaves the money for Maggie at the café with a note reading "I'm still sorry." How she arrived at the exact figure is still unexplained.
• W19 · Antaan's world is yellow, and fear killed it (Ep 7, Ep 8). Resolved in Episode 8. Sinestro forges a lantern from the fear that soaks that world, and it comes out green streaked with yellow. [COMICS] Yellow is the colour of fear in Green Lantern mythology. The finale still names neither Parallax nor the Sinestro Corps. Q26 tracks what the lantern means for John.
• W20 · The ring is almost out of charge (Ep 6, Ep 7, Ep 8). Resolved in Episode 8. John recharges it from the lantern Sinestro forged, and the charge erases the Halogram.
• W21 · Sinestro says he can bring Hal back (Ep 8). He offers it to the Halogram in exchange for turning on John, and the Halogram refuses. Whether he could is never tested, and he is left alive.

Ruled out

• Kerry Kane as the surviving Manhunter. Hal's photograph establishes that she existed before the Manhunter took its Rushville identity, which removes her as his principal suspect. It does not independently prove she is human, and a pre-existing identity would not by itself rule out later replacement by a shapeshifter.
• Zoe Macon as anything other than the Manhunter. Confirmed in Episode 5 and killed. Her heart crystallises.
• William Macon as a Manhunter. Antaan cuts out his heart and it stays flesh. That rules him out as a Manhunter. It does not prove Zoe's treatment left no other alteration.
• Hector Gutiérrez as the surviving Manhunter. Hector says he is human, and his accusation redirects the investigation towards William Macon. Zoe's subsequent identification eliminates Hector as the specific Manhunter Antaan's group has been hunting, but his statement alone is not independent proof of his species.
• Noah Macon as Hal's killer. He confesses to John in Episode 8 to protect his mother. Kerry's own confession shows it was her.
• John Stewart as Hal's killer. He broke Hal's nose at the café and left him alive. Kerry shot Hal later that night.

Q1. Who killed Hal Jordan, and where is his ring?

Kerry Kane shot him. After Hal came out of prison, Kerry stood by him while the town turned on them both. When his house was firebombed (Q25), Noah pulled him out and healed him with Manhunter technology, and that is how Hal learned what Noah is.

The night he died, Hal went to the bleachers to tell Kerry he knew, and to take her and Noah somewhere safe. She panicked and shot him as he was telling her he loved her. That fits everything Episode 6 established about the shot: point-blank, face to face, no struggle, and a body that was never moved.

Kerry then spent the season investigating the death she caused. In the finale, Noah falsely confesses to the killing to protect her, and Kerry plans to turn herself in until John talks her out of it (Q30).

The ring is John's. The Guardians had taken it out of service and given Guy a new one. John dug it up after the funeral, nearly ran it dry on Antaan's world, and in the finale recharges it from the lantern Sinestro forged (Q26). He wears it as Earth's Lantern, outside the Corps.

Our leading theory pointed the right way: someone Hal knew and did not fear. [CREATOR] Co-creator Tom King's earlier statement that Guy had Hal's ring stays marked as contradicted by the show.

Q3. What killed Abin Sur, and why was he near Rushville?

Status: ANSWERED · Raised: Ep 1 · Reframed and closed: Ep 5

Abin Sur deliberately brought Zoe to Earth to spare her from the Guardians' purge of the Manhunters. The crash did not kill him. Zoe did, afterwards, because she feared he might change his mind and expose her.

Asked why, she says she could not help it, and that you cannot escape your true nature.

The question as originally asked, whether the physical crash was an accident, is still not answered. Episode 5 establishes what he was doing here and who killed him, which is a different thing. Hal was right that the crash was not the whole story and wrong about what he was looking for.

Q4. Who is William Macon caretaking for?

Status: ANSWERED · Raised: Ep 1 · Closed: Ep 4

Zoe Macon, the Manhunter. The benefactor Macon has been protecting and the entity Antaan's group has been hunting are presented as the same person, who is also Macon's wife.

Macon initially describes Zoe and the benefactor as separate people: he says Zoe nursed him until a male benefactor cured his cancer. Zoe collapses that distinction when she tells John that she saved Macon's life herself.

Q5. How and why did the Guardians select John Stewart?

Status: ANSWERED · Raised: Ep 1 · Closed: Ep 3

Abin Sur's ring reached John Stewart Sr. first, and he failed its one question. A Guardian later told Bernadette that whatever the ring had responded to in him might be genetic. She raised her son for the job his father was denied, and the Guardians came back to recruit him as an adult. The show has not established that they watched him in the years between. John's path towards selection was set long before he could choose it for himself.

Q6. How did John Sr. know the question?

Because the ring asked him. In 1986, it lifted him out of bed in front of his infant son and asked whether he was afraid. He said yes. Everything the family did afterwards grew from that answer.

Q7. What is Zoe Macon?

Status: ANSWERED · Raised: Ep 2 · Closed: Ep 4

She is the Manhunter in Rushville. Episode 4 identifies her through Hal's inference and reveals that John had already suspected her. The episode itself does not show Zoe alive after the shooting. [HBO] HBO's Inside Episode 4 feature confirms that she survived.

The nurse accounts are the key clue. Macon presents Zoe and the benefactor as separate people; Zoe collapses that distinction by saying she saved him herself.

Q8. Is another Manhunter living in Rushville?

Status: ANSWERED · Raised: Ep 1 · Reframed: Ep 5, Ep 8 · Provisionally closed: Ep 7 · Reopened and answered: Ep 8

Yes. Noah Macon, Kerry's son, is a Manhunter (Q17). Q28 tracks what he does next.

Until Episode 8 this entry asked whether another disguised non-human was living in Rushville. Noah was born to Kerry and has always been Noah, so "disguised" was the wrong word for him, and the question now asks about Manhunters.

When it was provisionally closed after Episode 7, no other Manhunter had been identified. Zoe was the only one known to have lived in Rushville, Antaan's group accounted for the other known non-humans there, and nothing then on screen pointed to another.

The show has also set out how another might be found. Macon's detectors pick up aliens, though John says they cannot pick up a Manhunter, and a Manhunter's heart crystallises after death. Ordinary medical tests are no help: fourteen known species pass them as human.

We closed it because the evidence that raised it had been accounted for, not because the show had ruled the possibility out. Episode 8 shows why that distinction mattered.

Q9. Which original Manhunter survived the purge, and where was she hiding?

Zoe Macon, hiding in Rushville. That corroborates the central part of Antaan's story, that a Manhunter survived and hid there, but it does not by itself verify his entire account of how she escaped Green Lantern custody.

Sinestro supplies the test in Episode 4: a Manhunter's imperfect heart crystallises after death. Episode 5 performs it. John removes Zoe's heart and it crystallises, confirming on screen what Episode 4 could only infer. Episode 5 also establishes that Abin Sur brought her to Earth and hid her, which closes the history tracked under Q12.

She was not the only Manhunter in Rushville. Noah, born after she healed Kerry, is one too (Q17, Q18). The question was retitled after Episode 8 so that it asks only about the original survivor.

Q11. What do Hal and Sinestro trade?

They do not complete a formal trade. Sinestro gives Hal actionable information about identifying a Manhunter while trying to manipulate him against John. He urges Hal to discredit John and pushes the idea of killing him.

Hal rejects the killing and refuses to make the bargain Sinestro wants, but he leaves with, and later uses, the information. The scene is an attempted manipulation rather than a conventional exchange, and it also confirms that Hal was once Sinestro's trainee.

Q12. Who is Antaan's group answerable to, and why was the Manhunter never brought to justice?

Status: ANSWERED · Raised: Ep 2 · Closed: Ep 5

No external authority is identified. Antaan's group appears to have been acting for itself, and Antaan's motive was personal: he and the Manhunter had been together on his world and had tried to have a family.

The Manhunter was never brought to justice because the Lantern who took her into custody was Abin Sur, and he chose to hide her rather than deliver her. Antaan dies in the attempt to finish it himself.

Q15. Why has the Manhunter spent years reshaping Rushville?

Status: ANSWERED · Raised: Ep 4 · Closed: Ep 5

To build a town that would protect her. Zoe cured Macon's cancer, saved Kerry's life and healed others, and the debts bought her a community that would lie for her and a militia that would fight for her.

Kerry's 2007 flashback shows the method: find someone at the point of death, arrive with the cure, and be owed. Zoe says as much to John, and the arrangement holds until the moment she needs the town more than the town needs her.

Q16. Does William Macon know that Zoe is the Manhunter?

Status: ANSWERED · Raised: Ep 4 · Closed: Ep 5

He knows. Macon offers himself to Antaan as a decoy, pretending to be the Manhunter so that Zoe can stay hidden, and calls her beforehand to thank her for the extra years she gave him.

His decoy performance and that final call establish that he knew, even though he never names her. Antaan exposes the deception by testing whether he thinks like Zoe, then cuts out his heart and finds it human.

Q17. Was Zoe the last Manhunter anywhere?

No. Noah Macon is a Manhunter too, born after Zoe healed Kerry (Q18). Kerry has always known what he is. Noah has known too, and kept that from her. Noah is now the only living Manhunter the series has identified.

Q18. What does Zoe's healing leave behind?

In Kerry's case, a son. The finale shows one thing Zoe did for her: she restored a finger Kerry had lost, using Manhunter technology. Afterwards Kerry found she was pregnant, though she had not been with anyone. Billy Macon is not Noah's biological father.

Nothing on screen shows that Zoe's healing of John, or Noah's healing of Hal, left anything behind. Our Wild theory about John found no support.

Q19. What happened to Hal after his ring was taken?

Hal spent ten years in federal prison. His ring was decommissioned and stored on Oa, Guy Gardner received a newly forged one, and Hal was replaced as Earth's active Lantern.

Guy is unwilling to retrieve the old ring even for a funeral, and says the Guardians would send him to the Phantom Zone if they found out. Hal no longer held a ring or served as Earth's active Lantern. The episode does not define his formal standing in the Corps.

The question originally asked what happens to any Lantern whose ring is taken. The episode establishes only what happened to Hal, so the entry has been narrowed to match.

Q20. Who broke Sinestro out of the Guardians' prison?

Noah did, so that Sinestro would forge him a lantern charged with fear, for revenge on the Guardians. He picked Sinestro because Sinestro is the only one ever to have killed a Guardian.

All of it arrives in dialogue. The finale never shows the break-out, or how Noah reached a Guardian prison at all.

Q21. What is in Hal's vault?

A backpack holding a canteen, a poncho, protein bars and a gun, and a black sphere in a paper bag that opens an Einstein-Rosen bridge from the storage unit to Antaan's homeworld. John and the Halogram get the vault open between them.

Q22. Why did Hal keep a portal to Antaan's world?

To keep it closed. The portal was Zoe's, and she used it to revisit the world she had destroyed. Noah kept using it. Hal followed him through, found Sinestro there, and hid the portal in his vault so nobody could use it again.

Our leading theory was wrong. We said Hal set the bridge up himself and meant to go through it. He did go through it, but the bridge was Zoe's, and he hid it to keep it closed.

Q23. Did Hal take his own life?

No. Kerry shot him (Q1). The Halogram's theory had Kerry in the right place for the wrong reason: she did not find Hal and take a gun away. She was the one holding it.

Episode 7's account of Martin Jordan's suicide, and of the note passed from father to son, stands. It is not how Hal died.

Q24. What does Sinestro want with the portal?

A way off Antaan's world. Noah broke him out to forge a lantern, and he forged it there. Once Hal hid the portal, he had no way off.

In the finale he tries to buy one, offering to bring Hal back to life if the Halogram will turn on John (W21). The Halogram refuses. John and the Halogram leave him in chains at the forge, surrounded by fear-soaked water he cannot cross alone.

Our leading theory, that he wanted the portal because he had no other way off that world, held up.
