Will Lanterns Get a Season 2? What HBO Has and Hasn't Said

Short answer: no, not yet. HBO has not renewed Lanterns, and the first season still has five episodes to run.

The longer answer is stranger. A writers room has been developing a second season since before the show aired, it is being run by a partly different team, and the first season was deliberately built as a story that finishes.

Has Lanterns been renewed for season 2?

No. As of early September 2026 there is no order from HBO or DC Studios.

The eight-episode first season began on 16 August and ends on 4 October. No decision timetable has been announced.

Why Lanterns season 2 is already being written

Because the people making it decided not to wait.

Showrunner Chris Mundy has said the team is roughly six weeks into laying out a potential second season and expects to discuss it with decision-makers soon. Reporting from The Ankler in August had a writers room already running for over a month at that point, before any renewal.

No episode scripts exist yet. The work is at the breaking-story stage, which comes before scripts are drafted, and it is being done on the assumption of an order that has not come.

Mundy has been direct about what that costs. His stated approach is to proceed with total confidence and accept not being heartbroken if it does not happen.

There is a practical reason for it too. Having the story worked out at the moment of a greenlight means filming can start sooner, which could reduce the gap between seasons.

The current writers room does not include Damon Lindelof or Tom King. Lindelof signed for a single season, is not expected to return, and is now running The Chain for HBO. King is occupied with DC's animated Mister Miracle, and reporting says he remains involved outside the room.

Chris Mundy stays as showrunner. Christopher Cantwell, who co-created Halt and Catch Fire and produced Paper Girls, was brought in as co-showrunner in May and has written comics for both DC and Marvel. The two are reported as the prospective co-showrunners for a second season.

So the team that would make one overlaps with the first without matching it.

How well is Lanterns doing?

Well enough that the question is being asked seriously.

The premiere drew 9.3 million viewers worldwide in three days, which Warner Bros. Discovery called DC Studios' biggest series debut on HBO Max.

That is the only figure the studio has released. There is no comparable number for any later episode. Third-party charts show the series continuing to rank strongly, but chart positions are not viewer totals and do not reveal whether more or fewer people watched than at the premiere.

What would Lanterns season 2 be about?

Nobody has said, and the honest answer is that the first season was not built to need one.

Mundy has described season one as a story with a beginning, middle and end, whose mystery resolves. Lindelof has said much the same while adding that there is room to continue. The show was originally conceived as a continuing series rather than a limited one, so a closed first season is a structural choice rather than a stopping point.

Mundy's stated intention for a second season is to tell it in a different way, with characters the audience already knows.

The likeliest shape, given everything else DC Studios is doing, is more John Stewart. Aaron Pierre is already cast to reprise the role in the Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow, so the character continues on film whether or not the series does.

What remains uncertain about Lanterns season 2

Three things, and none of them is evidence either way.

How the audience is holding up. The premiere figure is public and nothing after it is. Retention across a weekly run is one of the measures HBO will consider, and those figures are not public.

Whether the pitch lands. Mundy and Cantwell are laying out a season and intend to take it to decision-makers. A developing season is not an approved one.

Whether HBO orders it at all. No timetable has been announced, and the only thing that resolves this is an announcement.

On the cast, Aaron Pierre has said they would love to return, while adding that they are proud of the season and at peace with whatever happens next. That is expectation management rather than a signal in either direction.

When would we know about Lanterns season 2?

The finale airs on 4 October. Mundy has said the team will talk to decision-makers soon, without specifying when, so the conversation may happen before the season ends even if the answer does not.

Everything currently visible is effort rather than commitment. A room has been running, a co-showrunner has been hired, a lead actor is booked for a film. All of that is a studio behaving as though it expects to continue. None of it is an order.
