Who writes ShatteredBulbs

ShatteredBulbs is one person’s project, written under the pen name Paul.

I’ve been watching films, TV series and documentaries closely for about 15 years. Entertainment is part of it, but mostly I watch to understand: who these characters are, what they want, why they make the choices they do, and what the people who made the work were going for. Some films are pure spectacle, and that’s fine too. A good monster fight deserves a fair hearing.

ShatteredBulbs isn’t my job. I run it as a passion project and a library: a record of how I think about what I watch, kept in one place and open to anyone who wants to read it. Social feeds suit quick takes. The longer thinking goes here. Comments aren’t switched on yet; I’d like to add them later, so readers can argue back on the site too.

I use a pen name to keep my private life separate from the site. Everything here is written and checked by the same person.

  • GLOWING3 – 3.5Good. A worthy night in.
  • DIMMED2 – 2.5A mess, but a watchable one.
  • SHORT-CIRCUIT1 – 1.5Mostly broken. One decent spark.
  • SHATTERED0 – 0.5Hot garbage. Hard pass.
Half a bulb?The last one cracks. A 4.5 clears Blazing but can't quite touch Lighthouse - a notch above the tier below, just short of the one above.

The three boxes

Every review ends the same way, with named lists in place of a number you have to take on faith. There are three, and a review carries the ones it has.

  • Bright BulbsWhat works. The scene, the performance, the choice that pays off.
  • Dull BulbsThe mediocre middle, neither good nor a disaster. Fine but forgettable, half-committed, wasted potential.
  • Shattered BulbsWhat breaks. Parts that fail on their own terms. Disliking something isn't enough to put it here.
An empty box is a result.Dull and Shattered can come back empty, and when they do we leave them empty. A film with nothing merely bland in it doesn't get a padded middle to fill the space, and one that fails outright doesn't get a consolation Bright. Most sites give you one number. Almost nobody gives you the middle.

What gets reviewed

Movies and TV, including the films everyone assumes you've already seen, the shows that vanished after one season, and the gaps we're embarrassed about.

How these pieces are made

Every verdict and score is mine, formed from watching the film or episode. I use AI tools to help with research and drafting, then rewrite and check the result. Every factual claim, from cast to dates to who did what, is checked against the work itself or a named source before it is published. When I get something wrong, I fix it and add a dated note on the page saying what changed.

Editorial independence

No paid reviews. No access trades. No sponsored placements. Nothing here is written in exchange for anything.

Everything is watched in a cinema or on an ordinary paid subscription, the same way you'd watch it. We have no screener pipeline and no relationship to protect. Being small is most of the reason, and it's also why a bad score costs us nothing.

Corrections

Factual errors get fixed, and the fix is noted on the review, never patched in silence. Opinions stand, because a score is an argument and you're free to disagree with it. A fact has no such licence.
