The Gentlemen Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

Season three is confirmed, it's eight episodes, Guy Ritchie is directing again, and Theo James says filming starts imminently. Almost everything else — dates, scripts, casting, where it's set — is genuinely unknown, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing.

Has The Gentlemen been renewed for season 3?

Yes, and unusually early. Netflix confirmed it in late August, before season two had aired, alongside the release of the main trailer.

Netflix made the announcement, and Variety reported the production detail around it: eight episodes, with Ritchie returning to direct and co-writing with Matthew Read, the lead writer on both previous seasons. Ritchie's statement was that a third season felt inevitable to him, and that he wants to push the show further.

Renewing before a season drops is a confidence signal rather than a scheduling one. It tells you Netflix liked what it had already seen. It tells you nothing about when you'll watch it.

When will The Gentlemen season 3 come out?

Nobody has said, and the honest answer is that what exists doesn't narrow it much.

The gap between the first two seasons was two and a half years — March 2024 to September 2026. Working from that pattern alone, some outlets have landed on 2028.

Against that, Variety reported at the renewal that the show was due to go into production imminently, and on the day season two launched Theo James — who plays Eddie and is also an executive producer — told ScreenRant that filming begins very, very soon.

Those two positions are less opposed than they look. A season can be scheduled and staffed without cameras having turned, so "no filming confirmed" and "filming shortly" are both compatible with a start this autumn. What production timing cannot tell you is a release date. An autumn start makes 2027 possible without making it likely, because post-production, Netflix's slate and the show's own two-year rhythm all pull the other way. Until Netflix says something, any specific date is arithmetic.

Who is coming back

Officially, nobody. Variety was explicit that no new casting had been done at the point of renewal, and Netflix has not published a season three cast list.

The Gentlemen's real argument isn't that aristocrats were always criminals. It's that they used to be able to make what they did legal.

James's comments about filming strongly imply his own involvement, but that is inference from an interview rather than an announcement. Everything below is the same kind of inference. Kaya Scodelario ends the season with her own supply line and unfinished business with her father, and Ray Winstone's Bobby Glass is planning a continental expansion on the assumption that everyone still works for him. Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, Vinnie Jones, Jasmine Blackborow, Michael Vu, Harry Goodwins and Ruby Sear are all alive at the end of it, which makes them available rather than booked.

Giancarlo Esposito is the interesting one. Stanley Johnston has now survived two seasons, ended the first inside a prison with Bobby, and spent the second selling Eddie a debt and whispering about destiny. He is the most obviously unfinished character in the show.

Of season two's new arrivals, Sergio Castellitto's Marco Moretti has the clearest reason to come back — Bobby wants to absorb his organisation, and Eddie went through him to commission the prison hit. Eddie no longer owes him money; that debt was settled with Stanley's loan, which Bobby then bought. Hugh Bonneville's Lord Hawthorne is unlikely to appear again except in flashback.

What season 3 is likely to be about

Ritchie hasn't described the story and Netflix hasn't released a logline. What exists is direction rather than plot.

James has said the new season goes darker still, and mentioned new locations and additional characters. That squares with where season two leaves things: Eddie has been widowed, buried alive, and has ordered a killing in a van that he made his own brother carry out. Read has framed the open question as whether Eddie has gone mad or is turning into someone capable of running an empire.

The three structural threads left hanging are Bobby holding Eddie's debt, Susie's Vargas connection belonging to her rather than her father, and Freddy — alive, and impossible to place. Where he is isn't the question. What he is now, and whose side that puts him on, is.

The Meghan Markle rumour

Worth addressing because it is one of the most prominent rumours attached to season three, and because the reporting on it contradicts itself.

Here is what is actually established. Reports in August claimed the Duchess of Sussex was in talks for a role. Variety noted at the renewal that no casting had been done, those rumours included. Subsequent reports claimed the role had been withdrawn after online backlash, while others claimed talks were continuing. Netflix has never confirmed she was cast, never confirmed she was dropped, and has said nothing about it at all.

Theo James, asked about it in an interview, was dismissive — he said he didn't even know the practicalities of how one would make that happen. Asked who he would actually want, he described wanting someone psychopathic, in the old Robert Carlyle mould.

So: an unconfirmed rumour, denied by nobody official, dismissed by the lead, and reported in mutually exclusive versions. Treat accordingly.

What we don't know yet

A release date. A filming start date beyond "soon". Any script detail. A single confirmed cast member other than by inference. Where it's set. Whether the run time or episode structure changes. Whether Freddy is in it.
