Hermione’s nerdy Harry Potter moments prove she has done the reading

Hermione has done the reading: her spells, Polyjuice Potion, Time-Turner and bag of books turn schoolwork into survival.

Spoilers through Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) is the one who has done the reading. Her raised hand can irritate a teacher, and her corrections can irritate her friends, but knowing the answer becomes useful when schoolwork turns into danger. The same habit follows her from the Hogwarts Express to a tent full of books.

She does not wait for an exam to use what she knows.

Hermione repairs Harry’s glasses on the train

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Hermione treats the trip to school as a chance to demonstrate that she has already started learning. On the Hogwarts Express, Hermione watches Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) trying to turn his rat yellow, then repairs the broken glasses worn by Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) with Oculus Reparo.

Her confidence is the nerdy part: she has practised before her first Hogwarts lesson and is ready to show the boys a spell that works. She checks the result with the attention of someone expecting it to be correct.

Hermione explains the bewitched Great Hall ceiling

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Hermione arrives with the explanation for something the other new students are still admiring.

Hermione says the Great Hall ceiling is bewitched to look like the night sky. She knows because she has read Hogwarts, A History.

Hermione keeps her hand raised in Potions

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Hermione wants the question to reach the person who can answer it. Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) uses the first Potions lesson to test Harry on material he does not know. Hermione raises her hand and keeps trying to be noticed.

Her straight back and extended arm make the point without a speech: she has learnt this and wants to say so. Snape’s attention stays on Harry, leaving the prepared student volunteering beside the unprepared one.

Hermione corrects Wingardium Leviosa

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Hermione hears a pronunciation mistake and cannot leave it alone. Ron struggles to lift his feather in Charms, so Hermione corrects Wingardium Leviosa, stressing Leviosa rather than Leviosar. She demonstrates the spell and the feather rises.

The correcting look is part of the lesson: she expects him to care about the detail that he is getting wrong. Hermione has the answer and very little patience for having to repeat it.

Hermione finds Nicolas Flamel in her light reading

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Hermione’s idea of casual reading is a reference book big enough to solve the mystery. When the friends need to identify Nicolas Flamel, Hermione fetches a large volume she borrowed for “light reading”. It tells them about the Sorcerer’s Stone and what it can do.

Her “Honestly, don’t you two read?” comes with a look at Harry and Ron. For her, checking a book is the obvious next step.

Hermione uses Lumos Solem against Devil’s Snare

Hermione’s Herbology knowledge gives her a way out when panic makes the trap worse. Caught in Devil’s Snare, Hermione tells Harry and Ron to relax because struggling makes the plant tighten. Harry follows her advice; Ron keeps fighting it.

She remembers that Devil’s Snare hates sunlight and uses Lumos Solem to free Ron. Harry supplies the payoff: “Lucky Hermione pays attention in Herbology.” Her classroom attention has just rescued the classmate who could not calm down.

Hermione worries when Snape flattens Lockhart

Hermione’s faith in a celebrated author survives evidence that he cannot handle a duel. Snape sends Gilderoy Lockhart (Kenneth Branagh) flying at the Duelling Club. Hermione, who admires Lockhart and his books, asks, “Do you think he’s all right?”

Ron answers, “Who cares?” Her concern is funny beside his lack of it. Reading has helped Hermione learn a great deal, but a famous name on a book can still make her trust the wrong person.

Hermione becomes the trio’s Polyjuice Potion expert

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Hermione is the Polyjuice Potion expert because she does the research and the brewing. Hermione consults Moste Potente Potions and prepares the potion in a bathroom so Harry and Ron can question Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) in disguise.

She turns a difficult recipe into a working plan, but her own disguise goes wrong when she mistakes a cat’s hair for a girl’s. Her knowledge is substantial; the mistake is in the ingredient she brings to it. Being the prepared one does not make her immune to an error.

Hermione identifies the basilisk from a library page

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Hermione leaves Harry the answer even when she cannot tell him herself. Hermione researches the monster and is petrified with a library page about basilisks clutched in her hand. Harry finds it, including her note about pipes.

The page explains what the creature is; her note explains how it moves. Her book knowledge has become an investigation, connecting a monster’s abilities to the attacks. Harry can follow that work while she lies in the hospital wing.

Hermione answers Snape’s werewolf question

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Hermione would rather risk a rebuke than leave a classroom question unanswered. Covering for Remus Lupin (David Thewlis), Snape asks about werewolves and Animagi, witches or wizards who can turn into animals. Hermione raises her hand, then supplies information even after he has told her not to speak out of turn.

He calls her an “insufferable know-it-all”, and Ron says he has a point. Snape takes five points from Gryffindor. Her answer is informed; Snape’s objection is to her insistence on giving it.

Hermione uses a Time-Turner to take extra classes

Hermione’s response to an impossible timetable is to take the classes anyway. With permission from Minerva McGonagall (Maggie Smith), Hermione uses a Time-Turner to attend lessons that happen at the same hour. Her ambition requires more hours in the school day than a normal timetable can supply.

During the rescue with Harry, she explains the danger of meeting their past selves and keeps him from interfering without thinking. The extra-class arrangement has given her experience with a tool they now need to save lives. Harry is discovering its rules while she is already trying to make him obey them.

Hermione trusts the textbook while Harry follows Snape’s notes

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Hermione’s trust in the printed instructions makes Harry’s shortcuts hard for her to accept. In the Potions class taught by Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent), Hermione follows the official recipe while Harry uses handwritten changes in his second-hand copy of Advanced Potion-Making. His potion succeeds where hers does not.

The annotations belong to Snape, although they do not yet know it. Hermione has a reason to question advice from an unidentified writer, but Harry’s result also challenges her assumption that the printed method must be the better one. The textbook is useful, and she is still reluctant to trust a correction to it.

Hermione packs her books in an enchanted beaded bag

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Hermione plans for flight without giving up her books. After Hermione, Harry and Ron escape the wedding, she produces clothes from a small beaded bag. She explains that she has used an Undetectable Extension Charm.

Ron calls her amazing; she objects to his surprised tone. When the bag rattles, she identifies the noise: “That’ll be the books.” She has prepared room for the library as well as the clothes, and regards that preparation as something her friends should expect.

Hermione keeps reading during the Horcrux hunt

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Hermione keeps treating books as a source of answers after lessons have stopped. Hermione reads The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore while camping and consults books at the tent table with Harry. Their search has no teacher to hand them the next task.

The biography also contains things Harry does not want to believe about Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon). Reading now means testing someone they trusted, rather than memorising what a teacher says. Hermione brings that information to Harry even when it hurts to hear it.

Hermione reads The Tale of the Three Brothers

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

Hermione has the text ready when a conversation needs it. Harry asks Xenophilius Lovegood (Rhys Ifans) about the symbol he wore at the wedding. When Xenophilius asks whether they know The Tale of the Three Brothers, Hermione takes out The Tales of Beedle the Bard and reads it.

Her reading lets them hear the story behind the Deathly Hallows before Xenophilius explains the objects it describes. She has moved from correcting a spell on the train to supplying a text their search depends on. The book is still there when someone asks for the answer.

Hermione can trust a published author too much or become irritated when a classmate succeeds by ignoring the instructions. Knowing the text does not settle which author deserves her trust. Her reading matters because she keeps trying to put it to work.
